人は死に、夢は生き続ける
エドワード（テディ）ケネディーが亡くなった。
いつも夢を追い、語っていた。夢は、どこに由来し、どのようにして受け継がれてきたのか。
Declaration of Independence：We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Martin Luther King：I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."
John F. Kennedy：The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men who can dream of things that never were.
しかし、兄ジャックも、キング牧師も暗殺されてしまう。そして、もうひとりの大切な兄ボビーも。
声を震わせて弔辞を読んだテッドは、その最後をボビーが好んで引用した言葉で締めくくった。
Some men see things as they are and say, 'Why'? I dream of things that never were and say, 'Why not'?
なお、これはアイルランド人の演劇家George Bernard Shawからとったもので、それはまた1963年に長兄ジャックがアイルランド議会での演説でも引用した言葉でもあった。

For me, a few hours ago, this campaign came to an end. For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die.
そして、2008年民主党の大統領候補がオバマに決まったときの演説。病をおして駆けつけて、11月の選挙でオバマが大統領になることを確信し、28年前とちがって、前向きに、次のように締めくくった。
And this November the torch will be passed again to a new generation of Americans, so with Barack Obama and for you and for me, our country will be committed to his cause. The work begins anew. The hope rises again. And the dream lives on.
彼の熱のこもった名演説はもう聴くことができないが、彼の夢はわれわれの心の中に生き続けている。
